CAMPGROUND UPDATE
Spring is just around the corner and camping season is a few short months away so here is some news.
As many of you know, Ray and Deb Daniels had been doing a great job as the Campground caretakers for the last three years and both were thoroughly enjoying the many friendships and acquaintances of our member campers. They introduced monthly Saturday night Potluck get together dinners, which were a great hit and grew bigger each time.
Unfortunately, Ray was diagnosed with cancer late last fall and passed away last month. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to Deb and her family with their loss.
Since then, long time member and avid camper, Eric Tope, stepped forward and offered to take over the maintenance end of the caretaker’s job - doing the toilet cleaning and garbage collection duties and other wise generally helping out around the site. This would allow Deb to continue on as caretaker and keep the continuity for both the Campers and the Club as well.
I think this is a win/win situation for all!
I would like to thank Eric for stepping forward to help out Deb and the Club. We need more members like him!
I would also like to remind everybody to mark their calendars for the Annual Spring Cleanup and Campground/ Property clean up on Saturday April 21, 2012. Coffee and muffins at 8 am and lunch served at the Club house. Bring your own leaf rakes and gloves.
Thanks.

Our old webhost it appears has gone out of business. So there has been some frantic work to make sure our website did not go down.
All is up and running now, so the cleanup begins. In the next couple of months I will be fixing all that does not work. Please funnel any comments through Gail @
the-office@courtenayfishandgame.org
In the mean time, how many have visited our webcam/weather station? See the Current conditions tab to the right.

BOW AND ARROW DEDICATION

Members are encouraged to come out to the Courtenay and District Fish & Game Protective Association for the dedication of the giant recurve bow and arrow now located at the entrance of the Archery road. Join us on Wednesday, 16 March at 1pm to see this amazing piece of work that was made and donated to the Association by member Larry Epp. Grab a coffee at the Archery Shack.
The completed bow is over 30 feet long, and contains more than eight types of wood, including fir, spruce, cedar, maple, oak, mahogany, purple heartwood and Italian bending poplar, a gallon of wood glue, two layers of epoxy resins and three coats of spar varnish. It might just be the largest in the world!

Dear BCWF Member,
The following news release has just been issued by BCWF:
BCWF Questions Why Public Access to Halibut Closed, While Private Harvest
Continues
Vancouver, BC - So, you thought Canada’s fish resources were owned by the
public. Not according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), says The BC Wildlife
Federation.
On October 18 the public will be prohibited from retaining halibut for the rest
of the year while private interests continue to harvest this species. Once
again, the Harper government, through the actions of DFO, skewers coastal
communities in BC by depriving them of economic opportunities from the
recreational fishery. Why? Because, in contravention of the Fisheries Act, our
federal government has gifted 88% of the total allowable catch quota of halibut
to 327 private businessmen to dispose of as they choose.
“Over half of this commercial quota is not even being fished by the original
quota recipients,” said Wayne Harling, a member of BCWF’sTidal Water Fisheries
Committee. “Instead, they lease ‘their’ quota annually for $2 -$3 per pound (in
some cases, this amounts to more than $100,000) and retire to warmer climates at
the expense of the Canadian public. And that gift was permanent which means that
their quota can be sold or passed on to relatives in perpetuity, even if the
recipients never fish for halibut”.
“This gifting of halibut quota is just the tip of the iceberg”, said Paul
Rickard, also a member of BCWF’sTidal Water Fisheries Committee . “Unless there
is a public uproar over this give-away of halibut, DFO intends to go the same
route for all commercially-caught fish and shellfish on the Pacific coast. All
Canadians who value our public fishery should contact Federal Fisheries Minister
Gail Shea to voice their concern.”
For further information, please contact Patti MacAhonic, Executive Director,
BCWF, at 604-291-9990 extension 230 or 604-308-1914.

Invitation to “Paddle for Wild Salmon”
Fraser Riverkeeper will be participating in this year’s Paddle for Wild Salmon,
which will go from Hope to Vancouver, October 19th -25th, and culminate in a
rally and march in Vancouver on the 25th—the same day that the Cohen Commission
starts their evidentiary hearings to investigate the decline of wild salmon.
Riverwatcher Program
We invite you to take part in this awareness-raising and celebratory paddle, and
also help us launch our new Riverwatcher program, where we will build a strong
network of Riverwatchers who will work with each other and Fraser Riverkeeper to
defend and protect our waters.
If you will be paddling, and would like to help hand out Riverwatcher patches,
please contact Mary at mary@fraserriverkeeper.ca. We want our members to be part
of this very special Riverwatcher program. Mary will send more detail if you’re
interested in helping to launch the program, but don’t delay, as the paddle is
fast-approaching!
Paddle for Wild Salmon
As you may know, this summer was great for sockeye salmon returns, which is a
cause for celebration as well as a reminder that we need to continue to stand up
for Pacific salmon. The paddle effectively celebrates and calls for continued
support of wild salmon, and will be officially launched at a “Hope for Wild
Salmon” event on 19th October in Hope, with other events en route, including
Chilliwack (20th), Mission (21st), and New Westminster (23rd). First Nations
will take a leading role along with paddlers such as Grand Chief Stewart
Phillip, Chief Bob Chamberlin, and Grand Chief Saul Terry. John Cummins MP, Fin
Donnelly MP, Vicki Huntington MLA, Spencer Chandra Herbert MLA, Michelle Mungall
MLA, and Peter Julian MP will also be joining in on stretches of the paddle.
Click here for the itinerary. You may sign up to join the Voyager flotilla
(limited) or bring your own canoe/kayak and join in the paddle.
According to one of the paddle’s organizers, Elena Edwards:
"The Paddle for Wild Salmon is about recognizing the need to join together as
one strong voice to deliver the message to government, and to all people, that
we will not stand idly by while wild salmon go the way of the buffalo. First
Nations, fishermen, and communities up and down the Fraser River, and along the
BC coast, are all in the same boat, whatever our differences, pulling together
for wild salmon. Taking a stand for wild salmon cannot be put off any longer.
Wild salmon must come first".
If you are interested in joining the paddle please contact Elena Edwards or Don
Staniford (250) 230-1172, and via e-mail oceananele@hotmail.com
and dstaniford@puresalmon.org.
Or contact Mary at mary@fraserriverkeeper.ca
for helping hand out Riverwatcher
patches during the paddle.
With warm regards,
Fraser Riverkeeper

LONG GUN REGISTRY UPDATE
CSSA Poll on Police/Firearms Owner Relations - Please distribute Canada's police
associations have spoken out loudly in their support for the long gun registry.
This is contrary to the wishes of the recreational firearms community and has
brought to light a potential breakdown in relations between's police services
and lawful firearms owners.
This short survey will ask firearms owners plain language questions regarding
that relationship. Please take the survey and distribute it to your contacts.
